This Week's Interesting CD Releases (May 20th, 2008)
Actress Scarlett Johansson's album of Tom Waits covers, Anywhere I Lay My Head has garnered the most press and blog buzz among this week's batch of new releases, but it is hardly the only disc worth talking about.
Islands absolutely killed at our Hot Freaks party at SXSW this year, and the band's Arm's Way is an early contender for my favorite record of the year. Other discs that I have already heard and can strongly recommend include Blackstrap's wonderfully shoegazeySteal My Horses and Run, Bonnie "Prince" Billy's Lie Down In the Light, Free Kitten's Inherit, and Windsor for the Derby's How We Lost.
I haven't heard the new Wedding Present album, El Rey, but it is at the top of my shopping list.
Three Velvet Underground albums are reissued on vinyl this week: The Velvet Underground, The Velvet Underground & Nico, and White Light/White Heat. Another vinyl reissue worth checking out is Devendra Banhart's Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon. Mudhoney not only releases a new studio album this week, but also a two-disc remastered edition of Superfuzz Bigmuff.
