This Week's Interesting DVD Releases (August 11th, 2009)
The high school drama The Class (Entre Les Murs) has earned almost universal critical acclaim, and is the theatrical film I most look forward to this week. The Polish film Katyn, which tells the story of Stalin's purge of intellectuals, clergy, and officers, is also high on my list.
Of the television releases, I have to warn you that 90210: The Complete First Season is the new series, not the Brenda and Brandon classic. The second season of the BBC's Pulling (shown on the Sundance Channel in the US) is a more biting and entertaining option this week.
Two documentaries are at the top of my "to watch" list: The Final Inch, which examines the push to eradicate polio, and Fierce Light: When Spirit Meets Action, a film about when spirituality and activism work together.
Blu-ray releases this week include Johnny Depp in The Ninth Gate; Monsters, Inc.; and two Rob Lowe films, St. Elmo's Fire and About Last Night...
