2 Down, 50 To Go "Absolute Promethea: Volume 1" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)
Absolute Promethea: Volume 1 is a big book, both in size and substance. The 15x9 volume is is beautifully presented in a heavy slipcase, and its silkscreened gold illustration of the title character is breathtaking in itself.
The major appeal of this book is its writer, comics legend Alan Moore. I am always amazed at Moore's talent for creating story arcs, then pacing his comics' storylines perfectly. Absolute Promethea: Volume 1 is a great example of his genius. The story of student Sophie Bangs' transformation into the mythical Promethea (and her awakening to her new powers) is engaging and surprising. I can see how the series worked exceptionally well as individual issues, but taken as a whole this book is mesmerizing.
J.H. Williams III's detailed artwork is powerful throughout the book, and its intricacies bloom in the oversized format.
Absolute Promethea: Volume 1 collects the first 12 comics in the series, I am already anticipating Volume 2.
My next book is The Passport, by Herta Mueller.
