This Week's Interesting DVD Releases (March 2, 2010)

Where the Wild Things Are, the collaboration between director Spike Jonze, screenwriter Dave Eggers, Karen O's soundtrack, and the Maurice Sendak classic book, is on store shelves tomorrow.

For even more Sendak this week, Tell Them Anything You Want: A Portrait of Maurice Sendak is also released tomorrow.

One of the most delightful animated films I have seen in years, Ponyo, is in stores tomorrow, and I am picking up the two-disc special edition that includes a stuffed toy for my niece's first birthday present.

Three other Hayao Miyazaki animated classics are released tomorrow in two-DVD special editions, Castle in the Sky and Kiki's Delivery Service, and My Neighbor Totoro.

Another feature film worth checking out is The Beaches of Agnes, director Agnes Varda's cinematic tour of her life.

No less than four Alice in Wonderland DVDs are in stores this week to ride the wave of Tim Burton & Johnny Depp's feature film release:

Alice: the 2009 sci-fi television miniseries.
Alice in Wonderland: the 1933 film starring Gary Cooper, W.C. Fields, and Cary Grant.
Alice in Wonderland: the surrealistic black and white 1966 Jonathan Miller BBC film starring Peter Sellers with a soundtrack by Ravi Shankar.
Alice in Wonderland: the 1999 NBC television movie staring Robbie Coltrane and Whoopie Goldberg.

Among the week's meager television offerings is the second season of the post-apocalyptic series Jeremiah.

Wolfgang Peterson's The Neverending Story is finally out on Blu-ray this week.

What new releases are you picking up or adding to your Netflix queue this week?
