Largehearted WORD Books of the Week - January 9, 2013

In the Largehearted Word series, the staff of Brooklyn's WORD bookstore highlights several new books released this week.

WORD is an independent neighborhood bookstore in Greenpoint, the northernmost neighborhood of Brooklyn, that recently celebrated its fifth anniversary. Our primary goal is to be whatever our community needs us to be, which currently means carrying a lot of paperback fiction (especially classics), cookbooks, board books, and absurdly cute cards and stationery. In addition, we're fiends for a good event, from the classic author reading and Q&A to potlucks and a basketball league (and anything set in a bar). We're a small operation, just 1000 square feet and four people, but we read too much, so it all works out. If a weekly dose of WORD here isn't enough for you, follow us on Twitter: @wordbrooklyn.

WORD also hosts the monthly Largehearted Lit reading series, featuring authors who participated in this blog's Book Notes series and musical guests.

Finding Camlann

Finding Camlann
by Sean Pidgeon

Arthurian legend plus a comparison to A.S. Byatt's excellent Possession? Molly is 100% sold.

Gun Machine

Gun Machine
by Warren Ellis

The multitalented Ellis (the comics writer, not the musician) set his new novel in NYC, where a cop finds an apartment full of guns -- all of which are connected to previously unsolved murders. If this is anywhere near as fascinating (and cheerfully out-there) as Ellis's first novel, Crooked Little Vein, we're bound to be hooked.

by Marjorie Celona

Jenn says, "This is a harsh novel, honest, with rough edges that catch you and abrade, but with just enough sweetness and insight to balance it out. A house is not a home, and sometimes a mother is not a mom, and these hard truths are the remit of Y."

The Woman Destroyed

The Woman Destroyed
by Simone de Beauvoir

De Beauvoir's The Woman Destroyed and A Very Easy Death have attention-grabbing new covers -- all the more reason to give them a read, if you haven't already!
