Largehearted WORD Books of the Week - January 23, 2013

In the Largehearted Word series, the staff of Brooklyn's WORD bookstore highlights several new books released this week.

WORD is an independent neighborhood bookstore in Greenpoint, the northernmost neighborhood of Brooklyn, that recently celebrated its fifth anniversary. Our primary goal is to be whatever our community needs us to be, which currently means carrying a lot of paperback fiction (especially classics), cookbooks, board books, and absurdly cute cards and stationery. In addition, we're fiends for a good event, from the classic author reading and Q&A to potlucks and a basketball league (and anything set in a bar). We're a small operation, just 1000 square feet and four people, but we read too much, so it all works out. If a weekly dose of WORD here isn't enough for you, follow us on Twitter: @wordbrooklyn.

WORD also hosts the monthly Largehearted Lit reading series, featuring authors who participated in this blog's Book Notes series and musical guests.

1Q84

1Q84
by Haruki Murakami

Once more, in a new format! Those of you who wanted paperback but didn't want to get caught with only one of the three-volume set in your bag can now pick up 1Q84 in an affordable, single-tome paperback.

Calling Dr. Laura

Calling Dr. Laura
by Nicole J. Georges

This graphic memoir comes with a host of glowing quotes (including one from Rachel Maddow!) and an intriguing premise: the mystery of Georges' father, who may or may not be dead, depending on whether she believes her family -- or a psychic who tells her that her real father is alive.

Chu's Day

Chu's Day
by Neil Gaiman, illustrated by Adam Rex

Perennial staff favorites Gaiman and Rex join forces for an irresistible picture book about one small panda and his very big sneeze.

Missing Out: In Praise of the Unlived Life

Missing Out: In Praise of the Unlived Life
by Adam Phillips

Psychoanalyst Adam Phillips considers the common feeling that the lives we have maybe aren't the ones we should -- or could -- be living.
