Favorite Food and Drink Books of 2013

I have always been a fan of cookbooks and food & drink books, and this year when I co-founded the DISH: Food, Drink, Stories reading series I was exposed to more than ever. Thank you to publishers who have sent many of these books my way, my local indie bookstores who stock them, and especially my DISH co-host Kimberly M. Wetherell of Spirited (who is as bright and charming as she is a marvelous pastry chef), whose keen eye always points me in the direction of quality reading (and whose own cookbook will surely grace this list in the future).

These are the six food and drink books I have most recommended to friends, family, and anyone else who has crossed my path this year.

All links go to the authors' contributions to the Book Notes series, where applicable. I have reposted my original review below each book.

What was your favorite food and/or drink book of 2013?

Drinking with Men: A Memoir

Drinking with Men: A Memoir by Rosie Schaap

Drinking with Men is an impressive memoir-in-essays peppered with some of the year's funniest writing, and Rosie Schaap's voice is poignant throughout. An inspiring book about the social importance of neighborhood bars.

The Four & Twenty Blackbirds Pie Book

The Four & Twenty Blackbirds Pie Book: Uncommon Recipes from the Celebrated Brooklyn Pie Shop by Melissa and Emily Elsen

My favorite neighborhood haunt, which bakes the best pies I have ever tasted, shares its recipes.

Isa Does It

Isa Does It by Isa Chandra Moskowitz

Isa Chandra Moskowitz's newest cookbook shares a collection of quick and simple to prepare vegan recipes with her trademark witty commentary.

L.A. Son

L.A. Son by Roy Choi

Chef and restauranteur Roy Choi's L.A. Son: My Life, My City, My Food is impressive as both memoir and cookbook (over 60 recipes are shared), and is especially effective at examining the influences of Choi's family and the city of Los Angeles on both his life and food.

The New Persian Kitchen

The New Persian Kitchen by Louisa Shafia

Louisa Shafia's The New Persian Kitchen is both vibrant and entertaining as it shares Iranian recipes and explores the country's cuisine.

René Redzepi: A Work in Progress

René Redzepi: A Work in Progress by René Redzepi

René Redzepi, the renowned chef of Copenhagen's Noma, restaurant, offers three books in this collection: a cookbook, a journal on creativity, and a photobook.
