WORD Bookstores Books of the Week - March 5th, 2014
In the Largehearted Word series, the staff of Brooklyn's WORD bookstore highlights several new books released this week.
WORD Bookstores are independent neighborhood bookstores in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and Jersey City, New Jersey. Our primary goal is to be whatever our communities needs us to be, which currently means carrying everything from fiction to nonfiction to absurdly cute cards and stationery. In addition, we're fiends for a good event, from the classic author reading and Q&A to potlucks and a basketball league (and anything set in a bar). If a weekly dose of WORD here isn't enough for you, follow us on Twitter: @wordbookstores.
My Boyfriend Barfed in my Handbag...And Other Things You Can't Ask Martha
by Jolie Kerr
Kerr offers sage advice for cleaning everywhere in your apartment, from the kitchen to the bathroom to the closet. Sure, you could find a boring ehow video on some of these things, but wouldn't you rather learn from someone who can make you laugh at the same time?
Who Owns the Future?
by Jaron Lanier
We're big fans of Lanier's You Are Not a Gadget, and his latest (just out in paperback) is a rumination on technology and data that has been called both provocative and poetic.
Painted Cities
by Alexai Galaviz-Budziszewski
If you love fiction that evokes a city, this debut story collection from McSweeney's may be for you. New York is always the best, obviously, but reading about Chicago may be the breath of literary fresh air you need.
Sailor Twain
by Mark Siegel
This graphic novel was a staff favorite when it came out in 2012. It is an eerie love story steeped in myth and gorgeously rendered in black and white.
