Atomic Books Comics Preview - January 10, 2015
In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.
Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. The Mobtown Shank is his blog, and his comic Said What? is syndicated weekly in the Baltimore Sun's B-Paper.
Atomic Books has been named one of BuzzFeed's Great American Bookstores, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America.
Ant-Man #1
by Nick Spencer / Ramon Rosanas
While DC is still trying to figure out how to get Ray Palmer (The Atom) into a costume on the TV show Arrow, Marvel is ready to launch their equivalent character, Ant-Man, with his own movie. In anticipation of the new film, Ant-Man gets his own comic series launch too. It's a pretty solid story by Nick Spencer as Ant-Man, Scott Lang, tries to get his life together by trying out for Tony Stark's security team (reading this, you can totally see how this is a Paul Rudd character). It's slightly reminiscent of DC's Animal Man too.
Fatherland
by Nina Bunjevac
Fatherland is both very straight forward and surprisingly complex. Artist Nina Bunjevac tells the story of her family, where her father was a radical Serbian nationalist in Canada bent on overthrowing the government in Yugoslavia and attacking its North American supporters. The art is simply stunning. And the story - what political fanaticism that leads to terrorism can do to a family - is powerful. Fatherland is autobiography, history and political comics reportage all wrapped up into one gorgeous book.
I Hope This Finds You Well: The Collected Handwritten Interviews 2003-2014
by Dan Stafford
In this digital age, handwritten correspondence can be downright revolutionary. Over the years, Dan Stafford conducted handwritten interviews through the mail with R. Crumb, Adrian Tomine, Ian MacKaye, Jeffrey Brown, Johnny Ryan, Doug Martsch and many more! This book collects them into an impossible-to-put-down, very nicely printed edition.
Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #1
by Ryan North / Erica Henderson
What, you didn't think Guardians of the Galaxy were going to be the only ridiculous Marvel characters to be dusted off and rebooted, did you? This early-'90s Ditko-created oddity gets a fun and wacky new series courtesy of Ryan North (Adventure Time, Dinosaur Comics) and friendly art by Erica Henderson. North and Henderson are having a lot of fun here, and it shows.
