When I wrote this book, I wanted to speak to the rest of the world from Beirut. I guess I just wanted my city to have a voice, as it often felt as if the international community wasn’t looking — or it was convenient for them not to look — when Lebanon went through the war in 2006, for instance. I felt it was important to know that, as with the Syrian war, as with what’s happening in Palestine today with the annexation of the West Bank, and Yemen, people who’ve suffered the ramifications of conflict should be heard and that their experiences shared in some way.
