"Late in the Evening" by Dawn Raffel
Inspired by Paul Simon's "Late in the Evening"
First thing I remember, we were speeding down the highway in his father’s Chevette. His foot was on the gas. My hand was on the dashboard. The radio was on and the year began to change and the stars were shining brightly in their syncopated twinkle. Mile upon mile, the night was on our skin, blowing in through the windows, desire as sure as the swift curve of earth. Our destination kept changing. The words he spoke were lost. Our breath turned to fog, our bones thin as songs we had forgotten, broken notes. We grew old in this way, ghosts of the road, riding the airwaves, pulsing to the beat of the unseen.
Dawn Raffel is the author of five books, most recently The Strange Case of Dr. Couney: How a Mysterious European Showman Saved Thousands of American Babies. Previous books include an illustrated memoir, The Secret Life of Objects, a novel, and two story collections.
