Favorite Novels of 2022
Choosing my favorite novels of the year was a difficult task. So many impressed with storytelling, innovation, or both.
These are the 11 novels I have most recommended to friends, family, and anyone else who has crossed my path this year (my personal metric for "favorite").
What was your favorite novel of 2022? Let me know on Twitter or Facebook, or in a comment on the Largehearted Boy newsletter.
Disorientation by Elaine Hsieh Chou
Elaine Hsieh Chou's Disorientation is an innovative campus novel, funny and incisive, and one of the best books of the year.
How to Adjust to the Dark by Rebecca Van Laer
Rebecca Van Laer's inventive and engaging novella How to Adjust to the Dark is one of my favorite books of the year.
Reminiscent of the works of Kathryn Davis yet wholly original, Eugen Bacon's dystopian Mage of Fools is a novel that is as compelling as much as it is amazing and important.
The Mermaid of Black Conch by Monique Roffey
Monique Roffey's novel The Mermaid of Black Conch is a magnificent fable that speaks clearly to modern times.
Mouth to Mouth by Antoine Wilson
Antoine Wilson's novel Mouth to Mouth is as compelling as it is intricately woven, a book that is truly unforgettable.
Candice Wuehle's novel Monarch is wholly original and brilliantly bizarre.
The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan
Jessamine Chan's novel The School for Good Mothers explores motherhood, gender inequity, and a possible future surveillance state in this enthralling and unforgettable debut.
Sara Baume grounds her fiction in nature as well as anyone writing today. Her novel Seven Steeples is subtle, lush, and unique, one of the year's best books.
The Strange Inheritance of Leah Fern by Rita Zoey Chin
Rita Zoey Chin's novel The Strange Inheritance of Leah Fern is as imaginative as it is inventive, and its empath protagonist is unforgettable.
Thistlefoot by GennaRose Nethercott
GennaRose Nethercott's novel Thistlefoot is an epic and imaginative fairy tale.
The Town of Babylon by Alejandro Varela
Alejandro Varela's novel The Town of Babylon is a masterfully told debut.
