Largehearted Boy’s Favorite Poetry Collections of 2024

2024 was an emotional grind. Highs and lows and surprises mixed with disappointments. Poetry helped keep me centered every day, with at east one collection by my side or in my messenger bag at all times to remind me to view the world both acutely and with a sense of wonder.

These six collections are my favorites of the year, the poetry books I most recommended to friends and Largehearted Boy readers (my personal definition of “favorite”).

Brittany Rogers’s Good Dress is a striking debut collection, filled with poems that dazzle with their brilliance.

Jose Hernandez Diaz powerfully explores themes of identity and culture in his resonant poetry collection Bad Mexican, Bad American.

Vincent Toro’s collection Hivestruck is engaging and inventive, a book that explores the boundaries of poetry then boldly expands them.

January Gill O’Neil’s poetry collection Glitter Road is a vivid and evocative exploration of love and loss.

Kenzie Allen’s poetry collection Cloud Missives is a brilliant debut.

Leah Umansky’s collection Of Tyrant is both timely and timeless, a poignant observation (and manifesto) about reacting to persecution both political and personal.
